Your age stands exactly at 39 years, 11 months and 6 days. Your online dating profile says you are a thirty-something. Admitting you are forty will probably not get you as much attention. Is it OK to fudge your age online or are you committing an unpardonable act? Read on these dating tip from dating coach and CEO of a New York based dating site called Loveawake

Does age really matter any more?

It does matter, even if you hate to believe it. We live in an age-obsessed world. We want to grow up, but we hate to grow old! Look around; you can’t but help notice everyone engaged in age-defying strategies.

If it so happens that you bump into someone at a party, get along like a house on fire and fall in love, then probably his age won’t matter; even if you realize later that he does not belong to your age group. If you are in a steady relationship, the age factor may be a trivial issue. But age probably matters more in the era of online dating. That is because you know the age of a person before you get to know him! Age is a universal criterion used online to narrow the search for prospective mates; to avoid getting lost in the web of profiles!

Age may also matter, for some, for the simple reason that you can share many more likes and dislikes being from the same age group. A 40 year old may definitely not have much in common with a teenager. Careers, lifestyles, hobbies, and interests are more likely to be age related.

Why would people want to fudge their age?

We are dictated by a youth-prejudiced culture. We tend to equate youth with beauty, energy, and fitness, and therefore desire a younger partner. So faking your age (by cutting a few years off your true age) can get you the attention of a younger age group online. You may come across an amazing profile in cyberspace that you feel you may vibe really well with. Alas! You don’t fit the age bracket she is looking for. Should you lie about your age in a desperate attempt to make that vital initial contact? Some people hang out with a younger crowd and truly believe they are more compatible and enjoy being in the company of younger people. A few single men may want to father kids later in a relationship and so may prefer to be in a relationship with a younger woman. A few others lie about their age because age is used as a yardstick to gauge a person. Your looks, career achievements, health, and earning potential are measured through a predetermined timetable for that particular age.

So is it OK to lie about your age?

Most online daters fib their age only to get that initial attention with an honest intention to confess later. Once you seem to connect, you can let the cat out of the bag. Explain why you had to lie as a frantic measure to get across. It may even be seen as a compliment! In the age of internet dating where everyone is vying to be “seen” by hook or by crook, it may so happen that you realize both of you have lied to each other about your age and have a hearty laugh over it. Looks like you are a “made for each other” couple. Some may not really look at it as a trivial issue and may view you with suspicion. It is human to assume that if you can lie once, you can do it again. Your insecurity about your age may put off someone that really doesn’t mind your real age.

Any relationship grows on trust, so why begin one with a lie? If you sincerely wish to initiate contact with someone younger, be honest about it. Say you find her irresistible and feel you have much in common. So can she give it a try?

Lying about your age may possibly help you to meet your dream date, but it can be the very reason you may lose her. Is it worth the risk?
